September 29, 1926 - May 31, 2022
Jaffe, Murray Sherwood, age 95, passed away May 31, 2022, beloved husband of the late Margery Blum Jaffe; devoted father of Emily and John Adams of Succasunna, New Jersey; Meg and Peter Ash of Atlanta, Georgia; and Dan and Ky Jaffe of Columbus, Ohio; loving grandfather (“Poppa”) of Mark and Elizabeth Adams, David and Marcia Ash, and Lauren, Josh, and Kristin Jaffe; and great grandfather of Lucy Jaffe Graver. Murray was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1926, the eldest of three children born to Lester and Rosa Jaffe, brother of June Burgin and Nina Gruen. A brilliant student, earning a Phi Beta Kappa degree from the University of Cincinnati, Murray was in medical school by the age of 17. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, attaining the rank of lieutenant as physician on the USS Valcour and being awarded the Victory Medal. He led a distinguished career as a surgeon at the Jewish Hospital, was a member of the Cincinnati Surgical Society, and president of the Ohio division of the American Cancer Society in 1970-71. He and his late wife Margery had a wonderfully happy marriage for almost 60 years and raised three children. He was a devoted grandfather to his seven grandchildren, and thrilled to hear of his newly born first great grandchild. Murray had a passion for art, music, and travel. He was in many ways a Renaissance man, learning Italian through his study abroad in Perugia, Italy, taking up running in his 50s which he credits for his longevity, supporting and adoring chamber music, becoming a connoisseur of fine wines and, after retiring, pursuing art and creating many fine sculptures. He loved Charleston, South Carolina. After the death of his beloved wife, he found deep companionship with Jane Friedman and lived with her happily for several years. He loved the Jewish community. He loved his family. He will be deeply missed. Graveside services will be held at the United Jewish Cemetery, Clifton location, 730 Ludlow Avenue, Cincinnati 45220, June 6, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association. Because we have immunocompromised people in the family, we’d like for people to wear masks when they are interacting with family. Thank you.
