DOROTHY ANNE BLATT We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of our mother, Dorothy Anne (Dabby) Blatt. Our mother filled her life with love of family, friends, books, music, travel, and a commitment to women’s reproductive healthcare, philanthropy, and community engagement. Dabby raised 6 children – David (Melinda), Dan, Deborah (Shmuel), Jon (Gina), Josh (Chrissie) and Rachel and was grandmother to 15 grandchildren, Nathan (Cynthia), Mitchell, Adam, Maya, Jason (Liz), Sarah, Ariel, Jillian, Leah, Oren, Ethan, Sam, Ella, Miles, and Ben. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Dave Hall. She filled her 87 years. She proudly earned two Masters degrees – a Masters in Human Development from Harvard in 1984 and a Masters of Social Work from Smith College in 1989. Dabby traveled the globe and witnessed Israel before and after the War of 1967, hiked Middle Teton and twice rafted the Grand Canyon, traversed the Sinai after the Peace Accords, visited Jewish Refuseniks in the Soviet Union, toured Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and attended operas throughout Europe and the United States. Her favorite stop – Santa Fe. In her 80s, she made it to Hawaii and Alaska and her final trip was to California in December 2021 to share the joy of her grandson Miles’ Bar Mitzvah. She ran two marathons (both under 4 hours) and enjoyed 11 performances of Wagner’s Ring Cycle – from Chicago, to San Francisco, New York, and Vienna. She served on the Board of the Cincinnati Opera, the Planned Parenthood Foundation of Cincinnati, and Lighthouse Youth Services. She graduated from Leadership Cincinnati, chaired the Women’s Campaign for the Jewish Federation, served on Wyoming’s School Board, and helped craft a Holocaust curriculum for Ohio’s public schools. She loved to send cards, books, or a gift. She rarely missed an occasion to send a card – usually one that popped up with elaborate designs – for a birthday, anniversary, holiday or just to say “I am thinking of you.” Her grandchildren had a collection of hard cover classics penned by authors including Maurice Sendak, Robert McCloskey, Virginia Lee Burton, and Leo Lionni. Each son and grandson owned an enviable stock of Lacoste shirts. She read endlessly – the New York Times and The New Yorker were always within arm’s reach, and she filled her bookshelves with fiction and nonfiction. She bought books for friends, family, and even casual acquaintances. Her defining characteristics were her resilience, strength, and determination particularly in the face of illness. She lived with severe scoliosis, thyroid disease, diabetes for 42 years, and was diagnosed with breast cancer 25 years ago. She was in remission for nearly 19 years. The cancer returned almost 6 years ago but she defied the odds – living years beyond expectations. Her life was a blessing and we are fortunate to have so many memories to share and cherish as we mourn her beautiful life. Services Weil Kahn Funeral Home, 8350 Cornell Road, Sunday, Oct. 9, 2:15 PM.
